Welcome to Cambian Whinfell School, an Ofsted-rated 'Outstanding' independent specialist school offering year-round residential placements and day places for boys and young men aged 7 to 19. Our dedicated team provides a nurturing environment tailored to support students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and associated challenges.
A Supportive and Homely Environment
Situated in Kendal, Cumbria, our school occupies two Victorian houses with a large extension, creating a blend of historic charm and modern facilities. Purpose-built classrooms and comfortable living spaces ensure that students feel safe, valued, and at home. We emphasise creating a homely atmosphere where students can thrive both academically and personally.
Personalised Learning and Development
At Cambian Whinfell School, we recognise that each student has unique needs and strengths. Our flexible approach to learning includes Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) informed by our multidisciplinary team and regularly reviewed to ensure progress. Students have the opportunity to work towards various qualifications, including GCSEs and vocational certificates, while also engaging in non-accredited programs that focus on social skills and personal development.
Extracurricular Activities and Independence
Beyond the classroom, we offer a range of extracurricular activities tailored to the developmental needs of each student. Participation in sports such as football, athletics, and fell-running is encouraged, fostering teamwork and physical well-being. Older students benefit from bespoke independence programs at our Kendal Green site, a semi-independent residential setting where they develop the skills and resilience necessary for adult life.
Dedicated and Experienced Staff
Our team is led by Principal Mrs. Paddy Sandham, who brings nearly 30 years of diverse teaching experience, including over two decades dedicated to special education. Alongside her, Registered Manager Jennifer Carradus and Head of Education Michelle Turner work collaboratively to ensure that each student receives individualised support and a comprehensive education tailored to their needs.
Commitment to Excellence
Our unwavering commitment to excellence has been recognised by Ofsted, with Cambian Whinfell School receiving the highest possible grading for four consecutive inspections. Parents have noted the transformative impact of our support, with one stating that it has "changed their lives and given them hope."
At Cambian Whinfell School, we are dedicated to empowering our students to reach their full potential, fostering independence, and preparing them for a fulfilling future.
We look forward to welcoming you to our school.
