Welcome to Grateley House School, an Ofsted-registered, independent specialist school offering residential and day placements for young people aged 11-19 with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), complex needs, and associated challenges. Our unique, nurturing environment supports students with additional difficulties such as ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, and secondary mental health concerns like anxiety and depression, when these occur alongside ASD.
At Grateley House, every student has an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) or a Statement of Special Educational Needs (SEN). We are dedicated to helping each young person reach their full potential and prepare for adult life through individualised support, specialised strategies, and a staff of skilled professionals who understand the complexities of ASD.
A Home Away From Home
The school is situated in a rural setting in the village of Grateley, set in a large country house and grounds with additional education and residential premises within the eight-acre site. We have a large wooded area and hard-court surfaces for recreation. There are swings and an adventure playground in the grounds for younger students. This area even includes a traverse climbing wall and exercise machines.
Accommodation is provided in seven family style houses that can accommodate up to 5 or 6 young people. Each house has its own lounge, play/leisure area and kitchenette, with most homes containing bedrooms with ensuite facilities and a garden area.
Students are encouraged to take responsibility for tidiness around the house and in their own rooms as we support and develop their independence. Students are appointed single study bedrooms and are encouraged to bring pictures, posters, books and any other special items that are personal to them to ensure they are warm and homely environments.
A Personalised Approach
Each student at Grateley House follows a personalised learning program, which may include working towards qualifications like GCSEs, Functional Skills, and Vocational Certificates, as well as engaging in non-accredited programs such as social skills development and skills-based learning. Students are also encouraged to participate in enrichment activities, such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Bikeability, which nurture personal growth, confidence, and independence.
Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to enhance each student's learning experience, providing comprehensive support and helping them discover their strengths. We pride ourselves on a positive, non-aversive approach to behaviour, with teaching styles and strategies specifically adapted to the unique needs of those with ASD.
Grateley House is committed to offering consistent, structured, and diverse learning opportunities through an extended day curriculum. Our approach respects that each student learns at their own pace, with individualised goals and targets mapped through their Individual Education Plans (IEPs). These IEPs foster collaboration between students, families, the school, and the local authority, ensuring a well-rounded support system.
Our curriculum is designed to be broad, balanced, and progressive, with pathways that cater to the unique abilities and aspirations of every student. At Grateley House School, we celebrate every achievement and success, and we are here to help your child discover their potential, build lifelong skills, and prepare confidently for the future.
